Ai Tenshi Densetsu Wedding Peach
doesn't everyone love wearing a wedding dress? *ahem* On first glance, Wedding Peach appears to be entirely silly. Of course it is - but under all of that silliness lies a very good plot. The storyline centers around Hanasaki Momoko, a middle school girl, and her two friends, Tanima Yuri and Tamano Hinagiku. One day, Momoko is attacked in the park by a Demon (Pluie) attempting to steal her ruby ring, a memento of her late mother. Momoko is saved by the Ai Tenshi* Limone, who gives Momoko a sacred mirror which can channel the spirit of Aphrodite, queen of the Ai Tenshi. Momoko uses the mirror to transform into the Legendary Love Angel, Wedding Peach (in a complete wedding outfit!) and save her two friends. After this encounter, the Yuri and Hinagiku both undergo their own transforamations into Angel Lily and Angel Daisy. Peach uses her sacred mirror, Lily her sacred lipliner*, and Daisy the sacred timepiece. Each magical item is able to channel the spirit of Aphrodite. As if being hunted by demons of hate weren't bad enough, each girl is obsessed with the same guy at their school - Yanagiba Kazuya (Yanagibi-sempaiiiiiiiii!), though they are destined for other things... |

*Concepts & Words |
A constant thorn in the side of Momoko (and company) is Fuuma Yousuke, the goal-keeper on Yanagiba-sempai's soccer team. He is often crass, mouthy, and argues fervently with Momoko (making them a perfect match, of course!). As immature as he is on the outside, Yousuke is often the most perceptive of the Angel's classmates, noticing things that others do not. Like most Magical Girl series, there is of course a vast plot behind the transformation of the main characters, their love interests, and the evil villains. Wedding Peach is no exception to this, concealing big plot points until they are needed. No Magical Girl Shoujo anime would be complete without a talking animal (or whatever) sidekick. Initially a troublesome demon, the kawaii Jamapi of the ojama* soon is converted by the Ai no Waves* of the Wedding Operation Tampete (an attack involving Wedding Peach's bouquet) and becomes the cutie that you see pictured on the wallpaper. |
Strictly Shoujo Notes on Wedding Peach: Wedding peach takes a little getting used to, from a Western perspective. Girls in North America are just as obsessed with boys in Junior High (well, some) but the emphasis on getting married and having kids is not as severe at that age. It can be a little disturbing that Momoko, Yuri, and Hinagiku are thinking so seriously about their future. But hey, it is a cartoon. If you ignore, or just accept those bits, the show is quite cute. And no, it isn't just a Sailor Moon wannabe. |
